I think the move was too much for them.

We did locate Dasher the escapee, whose penchant for jumping into the filter might have contributed to his untimely demise. Rudolph was doing great until last night, right around dinner, when he just flipped over and went belly-up. Stress? Change in habitat? I don't know. I've read a couple of times about the breed of frogs, and we didn't do anything that should have killed them. I got them a bigger tank, the right food, all of it. Sadly, it wasn't enough.

Anya is upset but philosophical. I did explain to her that frogs are pretty delicate, and these guys had moved twice already. Their usual life expectancy in captivity is 3 years, and they'd made it two with us, so that could be relevant on top of the relocation.

I'm a little bummed, too. Twenty-one first graders couldn't kill them, but they live two days after coming home? It is a sad tale of woe.

But there is, after all, that whole circle of life thing, and the kids' sadness was somewhat lifted by finding a robin's nest with two eggs in it in our olive tree.
